1. Overview of the company
I did my Internship at the Wilderness Society (TWS) in Sydney. TWS is an environment protection Society. They have different campaigns that aim to protect the unique environment of Australia and at the moment there are two campaigns running. The first is to stop the land clearing in NSW. The campaign includes informing the public of what is going on, and what will happen to the environment if land clearing isn’t stopped. The second campaign is to attain world heritage status for Cape York in Queensland, which is one of the most beautiful areas in Australia.
TWS is not just based in Sydney. There are offices all around Australia and the different offices work together very closely. TWS has meetings with a lot of people to bring their campaigns forward, for example they lobby politicians and give further information and presentations about the campaigns.
2. My role within the company.
I came to TWS at the 14th November. From the beginning I was allowed to work at different tasks. On my first day I created a questionnaire for the Cape York campaign. We want to find out what the people from Sydney think about Cape York (if they know it, if they like it …). I also helped to prepare the Swagman’s Picnic on the 10th December an event to public the problems associated with land clearing. For example I produced a Flyer and went with my colleagues to numerous shops to get prizes for our raffle. Also I worked out the statistics from the last elections in NSW. It contains the results from the election, but also to give a presentation about it. That means that I had to make diagrams and graphs in which you could see the evolution and the variances. With this file I went to the University of NSW and worked there with a member from TWS with ArcMap, which is a geographic information system.
3. Summary of my work experience.
All together I can say that my time at TWS was a very interesting and nice. My colleagues were very nice and friendly to me. Especially my supervisor Malcolm Fisher helped me a lot, when I had any questions. For me it was a great Internship, because I studied geography, and environmental protection is one of the Subjects I can imagine I might work in, when I finish my studies. The work was always different. One day we went out to do PR, one day I worked with statistics, another day I made a flyer for an event. Finally it was a great and interesting time for me and it was a great experience, because the work is important and I felt that I was doing something worthwhile.
